Oral Health & Hygiene Program
Kilinochchi
The Need
In the local primary schools of Kilinochchi, there was no oral health education and nothing that enforced or promoted the value of regular oral care.
The Solution
As a result, IMHO Canada provided oral health education, promotion and care for primary school children in Kilinochchi through a supervised tooth brushing project, led by Dr. Sathyamoorthy.
Resources
The resources for this project were mainly the financial support from International Medical Health Organization (IMHO) Canada through our generous donors. The total cost was estimated at $4,450.
The Impact
This program directly impacted and benefited the oral health of the children, and allowed them to take better care of themselves and potentially educate their families as well. The target population for this program consisted of 60 schools in the region and there were approximately 40 children in each class. Therefore, 2,500 children aged 5-6 years were expected to be positively impacted from this program.
Through the Oral Health and Hygiene program, we aimed to better the overall health and well being of the children by ensuring they were educated in oral health. By educating them, we were encouraging a sustainable lifestyle where oral health is a priority. This worked towards UN Sustainable Development Goal #3 - Good Health and Well Being. This goal is about ensuring healthy lives and promoting well being for all, at all ages.
