Mullaitivu Home Gardening
The Need
Sri Lanka is experiencing an economic crisis in 2022 marked by shortages of fuel and food, and inflation of more than 50%. People all over the country are struggling to secure food and energy for their daily needs.
Power cuts are widespread. Schools are currently closed. People have been asked to work from home where possible. Local production of everyday goods is not sufficient to satisfy local demand. And foreign currency reserves have been depleted which means the government is not able to import goods to meet local demand.
In late June, the sale of petrol and diesel for non-essential vehicles was banned for two weeks; Sri Lanka is the first country to apply such a ban since the 1970s.
The Solution
Local contacts in Mullaitivu District have requested support for a home gardening project to encourage people to produce their own food; a solution which can be sustained over months, and years if needed. Our project aims to start with 50 families in the Maanthai East Divisional Secretariat (D.S.) in Mullaitivu District.
With assistance from the D.S. office and agricultural department, we will be distributing plant seeds, nursery plants and gardening equipment to each identified family. The cost of support for each family is estimated at $100 Canadian dollars.
After monitoring the situation on the ground, we plan to extend this solution to other divisions.
The cost for the Maanthai East Home Gardening Project is estimated at $5,000 CAD.
To apply this solution in 5 divisions, our target funding is estimated at $25,000 CAD.
Please let us know if you, or a friend, or family member are able to consider supporting this need in Mullaitivu District.
