Tree Planting in Killinochchi District
The Need
For many families in the Kilinochchi District, Northern Province, their work relies on fishing, livestock, and agriculture. However the effects of climate change , like droughts, tsunamis and floods, puts these families’ livelihoods at direct risk.
The Solution
We collaborated with local partner organization SJC87 Initiative and engaged with students from Konavil Maha Vidyalayam and Vaddakachchi Central College to plant trees across the District.
Planting trees allows us to address the extremes of droughts and floods and other climate change effects frequently seen in Kilinochchi District.
The Impact
600 students will directly benefit from the trees and shade planted around their schools
10,000 people in the surrounding villages will indirectly benefit from the reduction in climate change effects in the District
Completion of this project is in alignment with United Nation’s sustainable development goal SDG13 - Climate Action - in Kilinochchi District, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. Planting and growing trees helps reverse land degradation from war and migration in recent years. It also helps strengthen the resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards such as extreme droughts and extreme flooding.
