Moolai Cooperative Hospital
The Need
Moolai Cooperative Hospital (MCH) is located near the town of Vaddukoddai, in the small village of Moolai. MCH was badly impacted by the war and is attempting to reestablish itself. This hospital provides a wide variety of clinical services including Eye, Dental, Cardiology, Pediatric and Maternity, as well as geriatic care.
Facilitating a fully functional hospital in Moolai can potentially offer services for up to 180,000 people. This would remove the need for the residents of Moolai to travel 16km to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. The cost and time of travel from Moolai to Jaffna prevents residents from getting the care they need.
Being a cooperative hospital, MCH does not fall under the Central or Provincial Health system; it operates on the donations of the cooperative system.
The Solution
There has been a dire need of on-site medical doctors to provide around the clock care which can bring Moolai Cooperative Hospital one step closer to being fully functional, and give better care for people in the region.
After many considerations and discussions, it was decided that an onsite residence for a full-time doctor would provide immediate and reliable care for patients at Moolai Cooperative Hospital.
Construction of the onsite residence was completed in 2020 with support from Canadian donors as well as other donors from diaspora countries.
